About the Project

The Hedgecock Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Hedgecock name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Hedgecock.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Hedgecock's), by time period (18th Century Hedgecock's), or by topic (Hedgecock DNA, Hedgecock Occupations, Hedgecock Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Research Pages

Here are some of the current research pages included in the study. I'll be working on them, and could use your help!

The "House of Names" has a rather fanciful explanation for the original meaning of the name.

The name Hedgecock reached England in the great wave of migration following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The name Hedgecock is for a the personal name Richard. It is composed of the elements Hitch, which is a pet form of the name Richard, and the suffix -cock, a medieval term of endearment.

The Ancestry website is more useful:

You can see how Hedgecock families moved over time by selecting different census years. The Hedgecock family name was found in the USA, the UK, Canada, and Scotland between 1840 and 1920. The most Hedgecock families were found in United Kingdom in 1891. In 1891 there were 97 Hedgecock families living in Kent. This was about 22% of all the recorded Hedgecock's in United Kingdom. Kent had the highest population of Hedgecock families in 1891.

That matches with the personal history of my own mother Raper-151, as a child she would go with her mother Hedgecock-106 back to Kent for summer holidays and hop-picking.
